Dessert: Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt @ The Gardens Mall

For those who don't know already, my house is within 10 minute walking distance of Mid Valley and The Gardens. In school days that meant I was hanging around there 3-4 times a week on average, but now that I'm immersed in the working world, I don't get to spend half as much time as I would like there. That means I miss out on all the new shops opening in the mall, like this one for example, Moo Cow Frozen Yogurt located one floor below GSC Signature in Gardens.

I have to give it to Mid Valley / Gardens management for knowing how to make full use of space. Before there used to be nothing in that space except for some chairs and benches. Now, there's a brand-spanking new frozen yogurt stall there, complete with tables and chairs. Who would have thought?

The frozen yogurt concept should not be alien to most KL-ites by now. Another frozen yogurt chain by the name of Tutti Frutti has been springing up like mushrooms all over the Klang Valley. The concept is interesting - fill up your cup with whatever amount of yogurt you want, slap on whatever toppings you want too, and at the end you pay according to how much the cup weighs.

At Moo Cow, things are a bit different. Yes, there's the familiar topping section and yogurt-dispensing levers are all still present, but here customers don't have a free reign on their serving sizes. It's more traditional in that sense, where you just pick the flavour + toppings and get charged a standard rate. Besides that, while Tutti Frutti may have different flavours at every outlet, the Moo Cow in Gardens only has their Original yogurt and whatever seasonal flavours of the day they may have - it was Wheatgrass and Root Beer while we were there.

I won't say whether Tutti Frutti or Moo Cow has a better concept. Both have pros and cons to me. I appreciate how Tutti Frutti gives me free reign over the amount of yogurt or toppings I want, but Moo Cow definitely wins in the quality and price department I think. Also if you're the kind thats always looking out for healthy food alternatives (I'm not one of those btw), then you'll probably be hooked by the emphasis on healthy toppings at Moo Cow. This I can definitely vouch for, as the toppings are healthy choices like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and apricot bits.

I, being a purist, went for the original flavour yogurt. And because I don't like toppings, I just had some chocolate sauce as my topping. But being a purist, one mouthful of the yogurt and I knew that this was truly yogurt! If you have ever been to an Indian restaurant and like those sweet lassi drinks, then this is definitely for you. It tastes nearly exactly the same, except that is a drink and  this is like ice cream! I know some might find the flavour too overpowering, and I think the owners know it too, hence the choice of other seasonal flavours. But for those who just love plain yogurt, then you're really in for a treat at Moo Cow. =)

Wendy went for one of the seasonal flavours, namely the Root Beer flavour with sunflower seed toppings. The seeds were a recommendation from the staff, because she didn't know what toppings would go with root beer flavour yogurt (which is very understandable). Kudos to the staff for knowing their stuff though, because the two things combined very well together. The root beer flavour was sweet, taking a bit of an edge off the original yogurt taste perfectly, while the sunflower seeds provided a little bit of savoury tinge to balance out the sweetness of the yogurt.

The root beer flavour was also unique because we could actually taste a bit of fizz in the yogurt, like as if it was carbonated yogurt. It's not surprising because the root beer is mixed in after the yogurt is made, so obviously there will be a bit of fizz inside. It's definitely something worth giving a go, and will appeal to the tastebuds of many.

So in a nutshell, Moo Cow is definitely something you have to try at least once. Bring a friend or two along as well so together you can try all the flavours! This is an experience not to be missed... :)
