Food: Skippys Pizza (Delivery)

Last Saturday, we broke from the tradition of last minute ideas and actually had a program for the evening. There were Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie tickets bought for 8:30pm, and we had a plan to watch Part 1 just before going to watch Part 2 (which was an awesome decision by the way. Stay tuned for that review! =D). So instead of wasting time heading out to find dinner, we decided to eat in instead.

For us, the term 'eating in' is usually associated with Domino's Pizza, and sometimes McDonald's. But a few weeks ago Wendy discovered this other pizza delivery business thanks to a friend of hers, and we were itching to give it a try. So what better opportunity to do exactly that? =)

If I had to distinguish Skippys Pizza with all other normal pizza joints, the answer would be - Pork Pizza! Yes, Skippys prides itself on serving pork as one of its choices of toppings for the pizzas. Though the target market for pork is of course a niche one, it does attract the curiosity of pork eaters like us to give this a try! Besides pork, it also does quite a sizable selection of vegetarian pizzas.

(When the pizza came in the evening, it even caused a commotion on my street because a few of my elderly neighbours were sitting outside their houses chatting -- an orange Skippys delivery bike pulled up and immediately they were all so fascinated. Pork on pizza, delivered?)

Skippys does have a brick and mortar location where you can dine-in (the address is at the bottom of the post), but I think a substantial amount of business comes from the deliveries. Log on to and you'll be greeted with a simple site that shows all the tantalizing choices that will whet your taste buds!

Since it was our first time, we had the usual problems of not knowing what to order. Thankfully Skippys has lunch sets and dinner sets that can be ordered even on weekends. We decided to make use of that convenience and took the smaller dinner set (RM90) that comes with 2 large pizzas and 2 boxes of their Pork Ribs in 7 Sauces

The first pizza we chose was Marc's Special (RM32 for 12 inch). There's also Fay's Special; could they be the owners? This consists of  Pork Ham, Baby Spinach, Mushrooms, Garlic and Egg. Certainly a unique combination; one that doesn't appear in the usual pizza joint or Italian restaurant. This one had very interesting flavours to it, with strong pepperings of herb and mushroom flavours and generous portions of pork ham. The egg was certainly a unique addition and one that Wendy especially liked.

The other pizza we chose was Meat Lovers (RM32 for 12 inch), consisting of Pork Bacon, Pork Ham, Pork Pepperoni, Minced Pork and BBQ Sauce. As anyone who knows me can attest to this; where there is me, there will be meat! And this pizza certainly doesn't disappoint, with generous helpings of toppings spread all over, especially with the minced pork. Definitely a pork lover's paradise!

Unfortunately it wasn't all harps and angels for us, as we found the barbecue sauce base to be a bit too sweet. I think just a bit more tang would have been good. Cheese was also spread a little uneven, as you can see in the picture, the left side looks more yellow than the right. But then I'm just nitpicking - this is still a very interesting pizza, and it's definitely worth giving it a try.

Skippys doesn't have the option of different crusts, and the crust being used is the thin kind. We found the pastry to be slightly on the tough side. Surprisingly the pastry actually evoked slight memories of the gone-but-not-forgotten puff crust pizza that Dominos offered some time ago! This isn't as good though, so all it accomplished was reviving my long buried memories of puff crust pizza. =(

These are the Pork Ribs in 7 Sauces (RM20). We were particularly looking forward to this one! After tucking into the pizza, we took a short break to sample to ribs. Each serving has about 5-6 ribs, and each rib is quite meaty, although don't expect chunks and chunks of meat lah. I'm not sure what 7 sauces went into this recipe, but the overall taste that I got was "Sweet!". Slightly disappointing, as we expected more robust flavours (well it did say seven sauces!). Plus, we also already felt that the pork pizza was sweet, and now this. Don't get me wrong, it was still tasty though, and I think the RM20 price tag is quite reasonable for a portion this size.

The dinner set normally consists of 2 boxes of ribs, but we asked if we could change 1 box to Chicken Wings (RM15), which they happily obliged to do maybe because the wings are cheaper than the ribs. I thought there was some good taste and flavour. We agree that the drummet part was rather tough though and Wendy found them especially dry. Mother tried it too and she liked the wings, but she doesn't like drummet parts either so her opinion is based just on the wing.

Oh and I nearly forgot about the packets of homemade garlic and chilli paste that comes with each pizza! The amount of garlic is really so much that it's more than some Chinese restaurants I think. It did come in very helpful though, especially when eating the Meat Lover pizza or the Chicken Wings - dipping into some garlic and chilli condiments really helped to balance the flavours!

So the moral of the post is....

Skippys + Potter Marathon = A Content Couple!

Though prices at Skippys may seem a bit high, we think it still is worth a try. But please do check the website first to see if they deliver to your location, as they are not nationwide delivery experts just yet! ;)
